Eight songs on 19441945 (including "1944 Stomp" and the two-part "Savoy Jam Party") feature Byas in a combo with Charlie Shavers; he heads a group that includes trumpeter Joe Thomas; and he is heard in a quintet with blues guitarist-singer Big Bill Broonzy; everything works quite well. After moving to Europe, Byas kept busy, even if most American jazz fans forgot about him. Don Byas on Blue Star shows how strong a player the tenorman was in 1947 and 195052. The earlier performances find Byas and several other members of the Don Redman band (trumpeter Peanuts Holland, trombonist Tyree Glenn, and pianist Billy Taylor) interacting with some fine French musicians, including altoist Hubert Rostaing.
