The Hule`ia River flows into Nawiliwili Bay and upstream is the national wildlife refuge and the Menehune Fishpond, which can be seen from a lookout off Hulemalu Road leading up from the harbor. Lihue has several older shops and restaurants in the downtown area as well as newer shopping complexes around town.
