70% of all desktop computer users use CRTs, so most onscreen design is created for CRT viewing. But that’s changing. Personally, I haven’t owned a CRT monitor in years. In fact, I gave my last one away once I discovered LCD displays. LCDs, or liquid crystal displays, use layers of electronically charged optical glass and liquid crystals to bend and reflect light to display contour and color, as you see in Figure 3-20. The result is that each pixel is divided into three parts called subpixels—one part for red, one for blue, and one for green.
Orange is found in citrus fruits, fire, and a wide range of natural occurrences like sunsets and changing fall leaves. It’s a stimulating color that carries the combined associations of both red and yellow. Neutral colors such as black, white, brown, silver/metallic, and gray can walk the line between the warm and cool colors of the wheel (see Figure 3-29).
Consistency and continuity are imperative when attempting to bridge this gap. In the map example, if the zoom-out animation is not consistent with the zoom-in animation, the user might get confused about what the map is doing. The flow of that interaction would be lost, and the experience would not seem like a coherent whole. It would be best to handle the zoom in just like the zoom out but in reverse, so that the functionality of that interaction is clear to the user. Ease of use is yet another facet of interface design that animation can improve.
