Goody (1983) has outlined the efforts of the Catholic Church to extend its control over marriage. The struggle took on a new dimension, as we will discuss below, with the emergence of Protestantism and its very different view of the place of marriage in society (Carlson 1994; Harrington 1995). With birth and death as well the church sought to form people's understanding of the significance of these events and to place itself at the centre of the ceremonies that marked them. Baptism opened the door to salvation and legitimized the newborn in the community.

The Catholic population continued to grow as well, partly as a result of immigration, and partly due to a more rapid rate of natural increase. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, approximately two-thirds of the population was Catholic; by 1870, this had risen to almost threequarters. The increasing integration of the region into France had important consequences for the Lutheran Church as well. Although the link to German culture remained strong, French administrative control influenced the evolution of the Protestant churches.

This not only enriched the populace but also tightened the economic bonds between Alsace and the rest of France. In particular, stronger links developed between the Mulhousian industrialists and Paris-based financiers (Schmitt 1980). Not surprisingly, then, the collapse of Napoleon's empire caused dismay in Alsace. Aside from the feared economic consequences, the region had once again to deal with military invasion; from 1813 to 1818, foreign troops were once again on Alsatian territory. In addition, the spectre of severance from France was raised throughout negotiations.
