5 miles (728 miles) Useful Information Top Ten Weekend Walks Bibliography and Further Reading About the author David Bathurst was born in 1959 and has enjoyed writing and walking all his adult life. He has walked all the major long-distance footpaths of Great Britain including the South West Coast Path, the Pennine Way, the West Highland Way, the Cleveland Way, the Southern Upland Way and Offa’s Dyke Path, and his guide to all the official long-distance footpaths in Britain, The Big Walks of Great Britain, was published by Summersdale in 2007.

You descend again to a footbridge, ascend and take the second path on the right, proceed to Carn Les Boel and go forward to Gwennap Head – just before which is the fine headland of Tol-Pedn-Penwith – then descend to a road at Porthgwarra. This village boasts a snug cove with a beach of sand and bladderwrack flanked by sheer cliffs of granite rock; look out for the narrow cleft in the cliffs, just one example of the grotesque rock formations which make this early part of the coastal walk so fascinating.

Standing on a clear day on the Lizard, Golden Cap, the Needles or the Seven Sisters, when the views stretch seemingly for ever, gazing up at the stupendous Spinnaker Tower as your ferry glides across the harbour waters of Portsmouth, spreading clotted cream on freshly-made scones in the delectable old village of Portloe, standing on the Cobb at Lyme Regis with angry storm clouds rolling in from the south-west and the sea smashing against its walls... there are times when you will not want to do anything else but continue with this amazing walk, packed with variety and interest from beginning to end, and completing it, whether all at once or in stages, will rank as a significant and worthy life achievement.
